Treatment information
Disorders of melanin pigmentation
Pigmentation concerns are a growing, global issue; they affect more than 90% of adults over the age of 50. Regardless of skin color, they are a significant issue because of their unattractive appearance and negative psychological and emotional impact, affecting quality of life. Melanogenesis is influenced by both exogenous and endogenous factors that can lead to a localized overproduction of melanin. This excess of melanin translates into unsightly spots of pigmentation, which in the majority of cases are harmless. They are acquired skin spots, different from those with a genetic origin.
DERMAMELAN®
Hyperpigmentation occurs when an excess of melanin leads to darkened spots or patches on your skin. This is a global concern, but it is especially prominent here in Australia, where we experience high levels of ultraviolet radiation.
While sun exposure is the most well-known cause of pigmentation, it is only one of many factors that can contribute. Hyperpigmentation can also be triggered by hormonal changes, inflammatory conditions and some photosensitising drugs, as well as genetic influences.
Dermamelan offers a solution for those seeking clearer, more even-toned skin. By targeting the underlying causes of hyperpigmentation and working at the cellular level, Dermamelan not only lightens dark patches but also helps prevent their recurrence. WHAT IS DERMAMELAN?
Dermamelan is a clinical-grade topical treatment formulated by Mesoestetic to depigment the skin at surface level while simultaneously treating the underlying causes. The treatment protocol consists of an initial in-clinic consult followed by treatments in-clinic and an at-home skincare routine to promote deeper, longer-lasting results.
With this unique approach, Dermamelan offers a double corrective and regulatory action that can:
- Correct existing pigmentation
- Regulate melanin overproduction to limit the recurrence of spots
Dermamelan is the world’s leading medical depigmentation treatment. It can only be performed by a properly trained provider in a doctor-led clinic, such as our South Melbourne skin clinic.
HOW IS DERMAMELAN DIFFERENT FROM COSMELAN?
Both Dermamelan and Cosmelan are effective depigmentation treatments, but there are key differences between them.
Cosmelan is a milder aesthetic treatment and is suitable for less severe pigmentation. Dermamelan is a next-generation medical-grade depigmentation method. It is significantly stronger than Cosmelan, and therefore must only be used under a doctor’s supervision and monitoring.
Dermamelan’s groundbreaking formula allows for a more comprehensive and effective action when treating deeper and more stubborn pigmentation. This patented innovation can produce results after 6 months of treatment, making Dermamelan a more efficient and convenient protocol than Cosmelan.
HOW DOES DERMAMELAN WORK?
The Dermamelan protocol works through a dual-action mechanism that combines correction with a long-term regulating effect.
CORRECTIVE BENEFITS
Dermamelan actively reduces the accumulation of pigment in the skin’s superficial layer and encourages cell renewal. The combination of these actions helps to fade existing pigmentation and produce a brighter, more even complexion.
PREVENTATIVE BENEFITS
Dermamelan also helps prevent the formation of new pigmentation by regulating the synthesis of melanin and preventing it from reaching the skin’s upper layers. This is achieved through the ingredients found in the protocol’s three home-use products.
WHAT TYPES OF PIGMENTATION CAN DERMAMELAN TREAT?
Dermamelan is designed to address various types of hyperpigmentation, including the following:
- Melasma or chloasma (also known as the “mask of pregnancy”)
- Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
- Sun spots or solar lentigines
- Freckles
WHERE CAN DERMAMELAN BE USED?
Dermamelan is typically used as a facial treatment. However, it may also be suitable for treating body areas that are frequently exposed to sun, such as the arms, chest and shoulders, where dark spots tend to appear.
WHAT PREPARATION IS REQUIRED BEFORE A DERMAMELAN TREATMENT?
Before your Dermamelan treatment, you are advised to follow a few preparation steps.
Avoid sun exposure and refrain from using products containing glycolic acid or retinol for at least one week prior to treatment. Your provider will review your current skincare routine during your initial consultation and advise you of any necessary adjustments.
Let your provider know if you have undergone any previous hyperpigmentation treatments. If so, you may be asked to discontinue their use at least one week prior to commencing the Dermamelan depigmentation protocol or delay the start of your Dermamelan treatment.
Please avoid skin-irritating shaving methods, such as razor blades, in the treatment area for at least two days before the treatment. An electric shaver is the preferred alternative.
WHAT IS THE DERMAMELAN TREATMENT PROCESS?
The Dermamelan protocol involves several phases and a combination of in-clinic treatments and at-home care.
STEP ONE: CONSULTATION AND SKIN PREP
Your journey begins with an in-depth consultation with our skilled providers, who will assess your skin and develop a personalised plan tailored to your needs.
At home, you will start preparing your skin for the Dermamelan peel with a booster cream containing brightening and pigment-inhibiting ingredients. The cream should be applied daily for 14 days.
STEP TWO: LACTIC ACID PEEL
Two weeks after your consultation, you will continue the preparation process by returning to the clinic for a lactic acid peel. This professional-strength peel assists with exfoliation, hydration and fading pigmentation.
STEP THREE: DERMAMELAN PEEL
The Dermamelan peel takes place in-clinic two weeks after the lactic acid peel. To perform the treatment, your provider will prep your skin with an oil-removing solution and then apply the Dermamelan mask.
The mask will remain on your skin for six to 12 hours, depending on your skin type and pigmentation severity. You will receive clear instructions on how to remove the mask at home, setting the stage for your results.
STEP FOUR: FOLLOW-UP
Five days after the Dermamelan peel, you will return once more to the clinic for an assessment of your progress. You will also undergo two follow-up treatments, a customised Age Element facial from Mesoestetic and an LED therapy session with Omnilux, to enhance your results.
ONGOING: AT-HOME CARE
Beginning 48 hours after the application of the Dermamelan peel, you will adhere to a dedicated at-home skincare routine. This regimen will last several months and is crucial to achieving and maintaining your results.
You will receive a set of three complementary Mesoestetic products provided by Kaya Cosmedica:
- Dermamelan Treatment — depigmenting cream to further the action of the in-clinic peel
- Melan Recovery — soothing recovery balm to reduce sensitivity, inflammation and redness
- Melan 130 Pigment Control — high-quality sunscreen to help prevent the reappearance of dark spots
These products are to be used for at least three months in strict accordance with your provider’s directions. This diligent approach ensures continued depigmenting action, helping to regulate melanin production and promote a bright, even skin tone.
HOW WILL MY SKIN LOOK AND FEEL AFTER THE IN-CLINIC TREATMENT?
After removing the mask applied during the in-clinic portion of your Dermamelan treatment, your skin may be red. This redness generally starts to subside starting on day two and gradually resolves over several weeks.
Skin peeling and dryness may also occur. The peeling usually starts from the centre of your face (especially around areas that move frequently) and progresses outwards. Allow the skin to shed naturally; resist the urge to pick or peel.
The sensitivity of your skin may increase temporarily. You may feel tingling or burning sensations when applying your skincare products. You may also notice that your pigmentation temporarily darkens. This can last until the peeling process finishes, which usually takes around two weeks.
WHAT AFTERCARE IS REQUIRED AFTER A DERMAMELAN TREATMENT?
It is essential to adhere to a comprehensive aftercare routine to promote healing and results. This phase is a critical part of the Dermamelan treatment protocol.
You will receive detailed post-care guidelines, so you can refer to them at home. These may include:
- Using the Dermamelan home treatment cream
- Applying other products per your provider’s recommendations
- Avoiding sun exposure and using a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily
- Continuing the homecare routine for up to six months post-treatment
Remember, our team at Kaya Cosmedica are always here to support and guide you through your skincare journey. If you have any questions or concerns about your aftercare routine, don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
WHAT RISKS AND SIDE EFFECTS ARE ASSOCIATED WITH DERMAMELAN?
At Kaya Cosmedica, we prioritise your safety and comfort. When used correctly and under the supervision of an appropriate professional, the risks and side effects of Dermamelan are minimal.
During the initial treatment phase, it is normal to experience some skin irritation or redness. During the at-home care phase, you may notice some peeling and sensitivity; however, these symptoms should subside as you continue using the recommended home products.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO SEE RESULTS FROM DERMAMELAN?
You will start to see significant change within a few weeks from applying the mask in consultation. There will be an improvement in the skin texture and a reduction of pigmentation. At home treatment is continued for the full 6 months to regulate overproduction of melanin.
Please note that individual results may vary depending on your initial skin quality. It is essential to follow the aftercare regimen for at least four months to help regulate melanin overproduction.
In some cases, more than one treatment may be necessary to achieve the desired outcome.
HOW LONG DO THE RESULTS LAST?
With adherence to the full Dermamelan protocol and good skincare habits, many patients report a lasting reduction in hyperpigmentation, a more even skin tone and an overall brighter complexion.
However, it is possible for pigmentation to reappear in the treated areas. To maintain your skin’s improved appearance, we strongly advise you to maintain a consistent skincare routine with high-quality products, stay hydrated and protect your skin from sun exposure. These measures will contribute to the longevity of your Dermamelan results.
AM I A SUITABLE CANDIDATE FOR DERMAMELAN?
If hyperpigmentation such as age spots, sun spots, post-inflammatory marks or melasma is a concern, you may be a candidate for Dermamelan. Unlike lasers, we are not restricted to particular skin types when treating with Dermamelan, making the treatment an option for nearly everyone.
While Dermamelan is suitable for most skin types and does not rely on skin-bleaching agents, it is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women or those with an active skin infection or allergy to any of the ingredients.
One of our qualified providers will carefully assess your medical history and determine your suitability for Dermamelan during your consultation. If it is not the right option for you, we may be able to recommend an alternative, such as BBL, Tixel, microneedling (Dermapen), Omnilux LED therapy, Dermafrac or chemical peels.
